Lucy Neil
Professional Cellist, Baroque Cellist, and Teacher
Biography
Born in Scotland in 1996, Lucy began learning the cello at the age of 5. She progressed quickly, joining the first cohort of Pre-Juniors at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at the age of 6, becoming the youngest member of the Junior department at the age of 9. Following a family move to Aberdeenshire, Lucy won scholarships to study at the North East of Scotland Music School. She completed her schooling at the Music School of Douglas Academy in Glasgow, studying with Rudi de Groote.
After graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2018 with a BMus(Hons), where she studied with Nicholas Trygstad, Lucy completed an MMus(Perf) studying with Timothy Gill and Joseph Crouch at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2019, and was then invited to continue as a Junior Fellow the following year.Whilst at GSMD, she discovered her passion for Historical Performance, particularly playing continuo, which lead to her working professionally on both modern and baroque cello.
Enjoying a varied freelance career, and becoming increasingly known for her versatility and ability to perform in many different genres ranging from very early to very contemporary compositions, Lucy has performed all over the UK, as well as America and Europe. Recent highlights include a 3 week tour performing in 15 cities throughout Germany and Austria. Currently based in Twickenham, Lucy combines her increasingly busy playing schedule with private teaching around West London.

“I cannot recommend Lucy enough! Having had a couple of tutors prior to Lucy we could immediately see the difference. She takes a real vested interest in the development of your child’s musical journey whether it be as a hobby or something more serious. Either way Lucy is 100% committed. She nurtures their strengths and develops their weaknesses. My daughter thoroughly enjoys her lessons and she’s established a wonderful relationship. As we can hear the lessons there is a lot of discussion and laughter yet we can still hear how much our daughter has progressed. We couldn’t ask for more and I would strongly urge anyone considering Lucy to definitely give it a go. You won’t regret it.”
